Mexican Modern Mercury Glass Bottle Lamp
A Mexican 60’s Modern “Osso Negro” (Black Bear) vodka bottle converted to a table lamp. An enterprising, creative glass worker used the silvering technique most familiar to Americans in gazing or witches balls for the embellishment of this ordinary household object. The Mexican domestic vodka industry has mid-nineteenth century roots as a beverage popularized by the emigre population of ordinary draftees and conscripts from the Eastern European areas of the Austrian Empire upon the fall of the Hapsburg Emperor Maximilian in 1866.
